put one’s head in the sand は、ダチョウが危険が迫ると頭を砂の中に隠すというところから来ているそうで、自分に差し迫った危険などから逃げることの意味となり、自分にとって不都合な現実から目をそらしたり、見ないふり、聞かないふりをすることとして使われています。
ちなみに、ダチョウは危険が迫っても頭を砂の中には埋めないそうですが、、、ww
put ではなく、bury(埋める）や、haveなどの動詞が使われることもありますが、どちらも同じ意味になります。
