【使える英語フレーズ】 「雲泥の差」「天と地の差」「月とすっぽん」は英語でどう言う?

今日紹介する「使える英語フレーズ」は・・・・

日本語でいう「雲泥の差」

つまり、2つのものが全く異なり、違っている様子を表す英語フレーズを紹介します。

日本語では、「雲」「泥」を使って表していますが、これは、「雲」は空にあって、「泥」は地にあるということから、使われている表現ですね。

「天と地の差」とも言いますね。

「月とすっぽん」なんて言う言い方もあります。

では、英語ではどうでしょうか?

Collins Dictionaryの定義を見てみましょう

If you say that there is a world of difference between one thing and another, you are emphasizing that they are very different from each other.

あるものと別のものとの間に“a world of difference” があると言う時は、互いに大きく異なることを強調しています。

There’s a world of difference between an amateur movie and a slick Hollywood production.
素人の映画とハリウッドの巧みな作品では天と地ほどの差があります。

使い方としては、

  • There is a world of difference between A and B.

という形で使います。

 

There is a world of difference between a winner and a runner-up.
優勝と準優勝じゃ天と地の差があるよ。

There is a world of difference between their claims.
両者の主張には天と地の差があります。

イギリス英語ですが、面白い表現があります。

be like chalk and cheese

又は

be as different as chalk and cheese

「チョークとチーズ」は、見た目が似ているけど、中身は全く違う、、、という意味で使われるそうです。

そう考えると「月とすっぽん」や「雲泥の差」とはちょっと意味が違いますね。

こちらもCollins Dictionaryでの定義を見てみました。

if you describe two people or things as chalk and cheese, you mean that they are completely different from each other.
2人の人間や物事を「chalk and cheese」と表現すると、両者は全く異なるという意味になります。

 

My brother and I are different as chalk and cheese.
兄と私は中身が全然違うんです。

I think these two products are different as chalk and cheese.
この二つの製品は全く本質が違うものだと思います。
